NOTICE TO MARINERS No.18 – 2013

Monday, December 30th, 2013

Reduced depths in Newhaven Outer Port Channel

The Christmas storms have caused severe siltation within the Outer Port Channel. The normal charted depth of CD-6m has been reduced to CD-3.5m on the eastern side of the channel (south of the East Pier). The centre of the channel has been reduced to CD-5m in places.

The Pilots and PEC holders have the latest hydrographic survey information and restrictions have been put into place for Ferry and Commercial vessel movements.

The Masters of all other vessels with a draft in excess of 3m are strongly advised to only navigate in the western half of the channel and to avoid making passage around low water times.

A request has been made for a dredger to attend as a matter of urgency.

Mariners are further advised that the forecast is for more southerly storms over the coming week and the situation may deteriorate before a dredger can commence work.

Hydrographic surveys will be conducted as the weather permits and any changes in depth will be promulgated.

Mariners wishing to see the latest hydrographic survey charts may do so by contacting Newhaven Port Control as below, or may request the latest PDF.

Mariners encountering any problems or requiring further information should contact Newhaven Port Control, Call sign “ Newhaven Radio” – VHF Channel 12, or by telephone on 01273 612926.
