NOTICE TO MARINERS No.17 – 2013

Monday, November 25th, 2013

IMPORTANT Notice to vessels departing Newhaven Marina.

It has come to my attention that some vessels (yachts, motor boats and angling boats) are departing the Marina without checking that it is clear to proceed. This has caused concern
to vessels coming downriver from West Quay and Denton Island and in some cases, evasive action has had to be taken to avoid collision.
Mariners are reminded that the Collision Regulations apply to ALL vessels and your attention is brought to Rules 5 and 6. Contravention of these regulations is an offence that
carries heavy fines.

Rule 5 – Look-out

Every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

Rule 6 – Safe speed

Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to the prevailing
circumstances and conditions.

Mariners encountering any problems or requiring further information should contact Newhaven Port Control, Call sign “ Newhaven Radio” – VHF Channel 12, or by telephone on 01273 612926.
