Oil Pollution Training Exercise – Newhaven Harbour

Notice is hereby given that an Oil Pollution Training Exercise will be held on Monday 18th March 2013 within Newhaven Harbour. The exercise will commence at approximately 1000hrs and continue throughout the day.
The initial oil spill and the centre of operations will be in the vicinity of the Ferry berth but will “spread” to other parts of the Harbour as time progresses.
The exercise will involve the use of boats and shoreside activities to lay booms and practice recovery techniques.
The exercise will be classed as a Tier 2 incident as designated by the Merchant Shipping (Oil Pollution Preparedness Response and Co-Operation Convention) Regulations 1998, which means the Port Authority will require assistance from external organisations and agencies to assist in the containment and clean up operation.
There will therefore be increased activity within the harbour on the 18th March and Mariners are requested to keep clear of the operational area and to navigate with caution. There will also be an increase in VHF radio traffic during the day relating to the exercise.
Masters and others in charge of craft are warned to navigate with caution and pay strict attention to instructions issued to them by Newhaven Port Control. Call sign “Newhaven Radio” – VHF Channel 12. Tel. 01273 612926.

Dredging Campaign March/April 2013 Newhaven Harbour

Notice is hereby given that intermittent Maintenance Dredging Operations will commence on or around Sunday 10th March 2013 of the Outer and Inner Harbour. These operations will be carried out on an ad-hoc basis in conjunction with the beach nourishment works at Bulverhythe and at the Ports of Shoreham and Harwich. The duration of the works is therefore dependant on the sharing of the dredger with these other operations and the weather. The exact timeline is therefore not known.

The dredging campaign will be carried out by the Westminster Dredging Company Trailer Suction Dredger “Sospan Dau”, which will exhibit lights and shapes in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. The Sospan Dau will at times be working in conjunction with the Plough Vessel “Adurni”, which will also exhibit the appropriate signals.

Masters and others in charge of craft are warned to navigate with caution and pay strict attention to instructions issued to them by Newhaven Port Control. Call sign “Newhaven Radio” – VHF Channel 12. Tel. 01273 612926.
