NOTICE TO MARINERS No 8 – 2010

Oil Pollution Training Exercise – Newhaven Harbour

Notice is hereby given that an Oil Pollution Training Exercise will be held on Tuesday 20th April 2010 within Newhaven Harbour. The exercise will commence at 0830hrs and continue throughout the day.

The initial oil spill and the centre of operations will be in the vicinity of the Ferry berth but will “spread” to other parts of the Harbour as time progresses.
The exercise will involve the use of boats and shoreside activities to lay booms and practice recovery techniques.

The exercise will be classed as a Tier 2 incident as designated by the Merchant Shipping (Oil Pollution Preparedness Response and Co-Operation Convention) Regulations 1998, which means the Port Authority will require assistance from external organisations and agencies to assist in the containment and clean up operation.

There will therefore be increased activity within the harbour on the 20th April and Mariners are requested to keep clear of the operational area and to navigate with caution. There will also be an increase in VHF radio traffic during the day relating to the exercise.

Masters and others in charge of craft are warned to navigate with caution and pay strict attention to instructions issued to them by Newhaven Port Control. Call sign “Newhaven Radio” – VHF Channel 12. Tel. 01273 612926.
