Cyclist seeks yacht for cross channel charity challenge…

March 8th, 2010

I was run over by a lorry whilst cycling and almost lost my leg, miraculously I have made a great recovery and so have set myself the challenge of cycling (carbon neutral) to Southern Spain for charity, following the Greenwich Meridian.

I need sails to cross the channel as part of my challenge. If you or anyone you know would like to help, please contact me as soon as possible. I have a professional skipper at hand if necessary and can offer you something to make it worth your while.

Thank you very much.

Private Charter Required. Sailing Yacht, Bareboat or Skippered

February 10th, 2010
Private Charter Required –  Sailing Yacht – Bareboat or Skippered
I am looking for a yacht to charter, to leave in the evening of April 1st 2010, and sail to Le Havre, and then back if required!
We are doing a sponsored charity trip down the greenwich meridian by bicycle and sail, to Spain, thus 0 emissions and 0 degrees (double zero…) so we need to leave from the closest Marina to the 0 degree line, which is Newhaven… and sail to Le Havre (closest french Marina to the Greenwich Meridien), from where we will cycle due south. My friend Tim Steel (A professional skipper and Ocean Yachtmaster) has offered to skipper there, taking me and a couple of others across (I am also experienced and qualified but not quite to his level), and then take the boat back. However we would also be very happy if the owner of the yacht wanted to skipper us, take their own friends, stay in Le Havre for a while etc.. the only aim is to gain passage south across the channel using no emissions!
So if your boat is lying idle that weekend, please consider that it would help us out greatly (our worse alternative is to charter from Chichester and sail to Newhaven to pick up the cyclists), make money for charity (saving rainforests in perpetuity), and make money for you!
Please can you let me know if you are at all interested by either email or my mobile number, below,
Thank you very much,

Trinity House 2010 AtoN review for consultation

January 29th, 2010

Harbour Master’s letter:

Dear Sir

I have consulted with the various port users of Newhaven and the general feeling is one of dismay that Beachy Head Lighthouse may be discontinued.

Here is a summary of the views and we hope Trinity House will reconsider.

Beachy Head light is a significant and unique aid to navigation, particularly for smaller vessels using the inshore waters along the Sussex coast between Selsey Bill and Beachy Head itself, an area which comprises many small, busy ports. These vessels, such as fishing vessels, commercial coasters and pleasure craft, are currently not required to carry or use AIS/ECDIS systems, and will in most cases derive no benefit from the enhancement of Royal Sovereign light as it is occluded from view over much of the area west of, and inshore of, Beachy Head. Vessels on a westerly heading still have the use of Nab Tower light, but vessels heading east have no comparable aid other than Beachy Head.

For larger vessels following the SW-bound traffic lane, passing abeam of Beachy Head gives a clear and unambiguous signal that “escape room” and potential emergency anchorage is now available to starboard after transiting the relatively constricted waters to the NE.

Whilst the principle of having one primary light in view at any one time may be adequate in sparsely illuminated areas, or where there is relatively little offshore traffic, it seems a somewhat riskier approach in an area of extensive background illumination (from the near-continuous chain of coastal towns of Sussex) bordering the world’s busiest shipping lanes. In effect, it is proposed to indicate a salient point by darkness rather than illumination, which seems to border on the absolute ridiculous.

The Dieppe to Newhaven Ferry uses Beachy Head Lighthouse as a visual “homing “ device. The Officers are still encouraged to look out the window and not rely completely on electronic aids. There is always the chance the electronics will fail.

Beachy Head is a hazardous area with shoaling water and steep overfalls in even slight conditions. The lighthouse does it’s job of warning mariners of the dangers.

Best regards

Capt. Dave Collins-Williams
